Personal background
I am a retired male Australian, very interested in the worlds around us and the ability to make contact with other intelligent life.
I am 73 years old and spend a lot of time on my computer. I live alone.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes I do believe that extraterrestrial life exists. When? who knows? maybe tomorrow or in thousands of years time - it will happen because the odds are so great that it is out there, maybe even in another Galaxy. The benefits would possibly be knowledge to make life on Earth better for all living things. I suppose the dangers could be anything from destruction of our planet to subjugation by another form of life.
We should send beacons for others to find (as many different types as possible)
and they must be friendly, but until we know how to communicate that will be difficult, maybe music and pictures.
I run SETI@home because I know that all help is needed and should shorten the time limit to making contact. I was very disappointed when the network was accessed by hackers and I was excluded. I think that we should be also endeavouring to find much quicker methods of communicating over space which is so vast! Maybe there is another form of energy that can do this???

I feel that even if (and when) we receive a message it will probably be light years old, so until there is some other method of communicating (more instantaneous)it is going to be heavy going, maybe other life has the answer?
I am optomistic and believe that science will one day be able to solve this one.
In the meantime we must all keep trying by whatever means and encourage others to assist.
