Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Maybe. We will discover it when we look for the right thing in the right place (we may already have seen it but didn't recognize it).

The benifits/dangers will vary with the different cultures on Earth. The people in poor, third world countries would hardly notice or care. People in developed countries will probably panic because it will disrupt their lifestyles (aliens will probably be seen as a threat to marriage, race relations, etc.) and bank accounts (anything that shows up for free puts someone out of work).

2. No need for a special beacon with all the RF we already broadcast.

3. To help a good project. Even if this particular project never finds anything, it's bringing a lot of people together and getting them to think about the possibility of alien contact. These people will NOT panic and will help spread the meme that people different from us are not to be feared just because they are different.
