Profile: Portia

Personal background
I am a long-time amateur astronomer (40 years), and a medical librarian by profession. I have written several articles that have been published in periodicals like Science, Journal of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, and Amateur Astronomy. I am married to Steve Carroll, who built telescopes for Starmaster Portable Telescopes for over 3 years. We count in our family two adorable Pugs named Portia and Pugsley, who love star parties and are known as the AstroPugs. My website is at http://sciastro.net/portia
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Idon't know for a fact that extraterrestrial life exists, but I have always been fascinated by the possibility. I think the SETI@home has brought together many people from all over the globe to process data sets; a feat on this scale has never before been attempted. SETI@home is by far the largest group computer project, and I think the numbers of people that have signed up speak for themselves. I wish the principle investigators all the best - and let's see if we can find something for them that's promising. If ET does indeed "phone home", then let's hope one of us gets the call.
