Personal background
I retired from the United States Navy where I served for 20 years as an Electronics Technician. When I retired I returned to school to obtain degree at the University of Iowa, College of Engineering. I graduated with an Electrical/Computer Engineering Degree in May 2003. I'm an avid science fiction reader and have been since I was about 12 years old. I still read a book a week and sometimes more when the books are really good. I have my own library of 850 books, most of which I’ve read more than once. It’s really expensive for me to visit a book store, as I always leave much poorer (but feeling really good!).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I first found out about SETI@home from a friend who mentioned seeing something about it on the internet and thought I'd be interested. I read all the information pages available at the SETI@home site about the science behind the project. Not so much the computer processing angle but the science of signal acquisition and intelligence detection. That alone took over an hour but I found the reading to be interesting. I signed up and loaded the screen saver version. Shortly after that I convinced a few friends and a couple of family members to begin “donating” spare computer time as well, I then started my own group.

Do I think that we will ever detect a signal from an alien intelligence? I don’t know, but I do think it would be a rotten shame if we didn’t look. That in itself is a worth while effort as far as I’m concerned.
