Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It's a big universe out there, and chances are, if there's life on Earth, there'd be life somewhere else too. I, unlike Neo, believe in fate. If the human race is to find ET, we will find it, or it will find us. If not, then this SETI@home project is merely consuming eletricity. Only time will tell...

If we were to transmit a beacon for others to find, there are many other factors we need to consider. Firstly, it is unlikely that the "receiver" will be at the same technological stage as us. For instance, more advanced lifeforms may have developed different communication systems which are so advanced that the systems we use are looked upon as extremely primitive. On the other hand, more primitive lifeforms may not even be able to detect any unnatural form of electromagnetic radiation...

Hostility is another very important factor. We may think that other ET may be friendly, but then think back to what has happened in human history. Many times, explorers have discovered other civilisations, but what has become of them? If any ET were able to reach the Earth, then that in itself is a statement of technological superiority.

However, all SETI are in a way beneficial for mankind. I have merely mentioned some risks, but there are also many great things possible. In everything we do, if we don't take risks, our progress will only be hindered!

But remember,

"There are certain things which Maths and Science can only look at with bewilderment..."
