Hi, I am 48 years old and live and work in Edinburgh the capital city of Scotland. I was born and bred in Peebles which makes me a "Gutterbluid" and most of you reading this "Stooriefits". But whatever we are, we are friends.
Scotland is one of four constituent nations which form the United Kingdom (UK), the other three nations are Wales, England and Northern Ireland.
My pet hate is being called English, and the "country" (UK) being referred to as England. Calling me English is close to an insult. Yes I'm British, Yes I'm European, but NO I'm NOT English !. There is nothing wrong with being English, it is just that I and many other "Brits" are not!.

| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

I think that both the purpose and the technology (method) of the SETI project are fantastic. I love the idea of utilising all those idle moments on millions of computers and combining their efforts into what is a massive task which only a few years ago no one would ever have contemplated tackling. "Many hands make light work".
The Internet itself is responsible for bringing this together, and I sincerely hope that the Internet will bring this world together to allow us all to live peaceful and meaningful lives, no matter what our beliefs, or where we live. Sadly (?) many millions will never see a computer let alone electricity, so let those of us who do, remember and consider them in all our actions.
I am positive that we are not alone in this vast universe. Although I am convinced that I am, near as damm it, unique. I know life is not unique.
I'm not sure if we will ever make contact or even detect lifeforms outwith our earth, but I do believe we should be looking. It is part of "human nature" to be inquisitive, inventive, and to explore and investigate everything. We should never live a blinkered life, or we lose out on many of life's enjoyments and hopes.
Beacons from earth are already going out, and I'm a believer that if you do something, then do it right and to your best ability. So, yes ! turn on our beacons and help make an alien SETI user somewhere out there ever so happy !
