Personal background
Professional geek and technical trainer. Native of St. Louis, MO, recently relocated to the Memphis, TN area. Am also deputy listowner of the SKEPTIC listserver, where we recently had about a monthlong flamewar on whether SETI was science or pseudoscience. The debate convinced me it was science, and sparked my interest in helping out.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? Absolutely. Do I think extraterrestrial *intelligence* exists? There I'm not so sure. In any event, if ETI *does* exist, I have sincere doubts that we'll ever meet face to face. Space is pretty damn big, folks, and even lightspeed is slow for traversing these distances.

Why do I run SETI@home? In part, to spite the members of the SKEPTIC listserve who think it's a pseudoscientific waste of time. ;-) In much larger part, because I am interested in the concept of massively distributed computing, such as the SETI@home project, and because, while I have no doubt that SETI will be unsuccessful, perhaps the data analysis being done by the project will advance the field of astronomy through the serendipitous discovery of something non-ETI that we weren't looking for.
