Profile: Matthew Shiroma

Personal background
I am a 3rd generation American of Japanese descent, still single. I was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and raised in Lodi, California. I currently live in Concord, California and commute daily to work in San Francisco, California.

I graduated from the University of California at Berkeley in 1974 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and later acquired a Master of Arts degree in Human Relations from Webster University while serving in the United States Navy.

Though my professional background is as a business manager and human resource management consultant, I have been a Data Processing Manager since January 2003. I oversee a large production support and maintenance team for a mainframe COBOL application that supports the "field services" operations of a large workers' compensation insurance company. My prior Information Technology experience is as the intranet site architect and developer for our human resource department and as the project co-manager for an Oracle HR implementation.

My hobbies are wilderness camping, hiking, fishing, reading, listening to music, watching movies and learning about computing technology.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe in the existance of a divine entity, but I don't pretend to be able to grasp or comprehend the nature of its existance. I think it is sufficient to know that there is something "greater" and to live one's life accordingly.

As I do not believe that man is "the center of the universe", I think it is equally reasonable to suspect that extraterrestrial life forms exist.

Whether or not SETI@home will ever be the vehicle for discovering other intelligent life in the universe, it is interesting to participate in an international community of like-minded pursuers.

I find the BIONC computing infrastructure and related "grid computing" technology quite interesting from both a systems development aspect and a resource utilization aspect.
