Personal background is my home network. I consists of some lab equipment furnished by my employer (IBM) and a lot of old equipment that I collect.
Every spare machine capable of running it gets a copy of SETI@home to churn away on while I'm off flying around the countryside. It helps keep my house warm all winter long :-)

Besides running SETI, I'm into:
Online gaming (namely EQ)
LARPing (see
other RPGs as well
life, the universe, and everything
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why SETI? Well, I've always believed there is other life out there. I'll be shocked if SETI is the method that manages to find it, but it's the best method we seem to have right now so I give what I can to it. Other projects (like human genome) get better funding and are likely to turn a profit for someone, so this just makes more sense to me.
