Profile: Dave Gillingham

Personal background
31 years old and working as a food sciences tech. Not quite the environmental direction I had imagined in my idealist years while completing degrees in Biology, Sociology and Philosophy and envisioning a holistic apporach to achieving world peace and ecological harmony.

Nevertheless I am satisfied with my current lot in life and have finally started Tai Chi, quit smoking, drink quite rarely and have generally grown up. In the process I got my drivers license and bought a fossil fuel consuming hunk of metal to transport myself from A to B (frequently as the sole occupant), have acquired material posessions which I can no longer carry in my pack and have been much more sedentary than in years gone by.

So now... I look for smoke signals amongst the stars.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have very little doubt that extraterrestrial life exists and believe we may even find it within our own solar system when we explore Titan, Io, Enceladus and the like. As for little green men or any other intelligent being the probability would seem diminished at best. Then for those same beings to have developed EM based communications technology, while living in close enough proximity to our own blue orb to allow us to detect them....

Meanwhile, who's to say whether a far more efficient form of communication may yet evolve which makes radio waves as archaic as smoke signals. The civilizations we seek to detect may indeed have transmitted their last radio signal just in time for it to have passed us by on a warm summer day in the summer of 1901, having of course been sent anywhere between 4.22 and 12-14 billion years before it reached earth.

But alas, I now sit on the hillside with several million other lonely beings staring off across the plains hoping to discern intelligence in the smoke filled abyss before us.

Here's hoping for the best!! Cheers!
