Hi. My real name is Manuel Nascimento. I'm a 23 year-old portuguese student of Physics Engineering, at IST (Instituto Superior Técnico - one of the country's top engineering Universities) in Lisbon Portugal.
I enjoy science in general, particularly physics, a taste that as grown since I was little. I also enjoy Science-Fiction a lot, particularly those works that deal with Humanity in a plausible future setting, as that makes us reflect about the problems of today and dream about the solutions for tomorrow, which we badly need to make our world a better place for everybody...
I like also OpenSource software and idealism, programming, video encoding, japanese language and culture, and I dream about living and working in Japan; I would at least like to try it out! |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |

I find BOINC to be a fantastic way for any person to make his contribution to mankind in participating in any of the projects.
I'm most excited with SETI, since I believe that we are not alone in this Universe. If the Universe is infinite, there must be another intelligent life form out there with technological capabilities.
Discovering that we are not alone will be a tremendous and disturbing find for mankind, which I think would make us change the way we look at the Universe and ourselves. I think the challenge of accepting that we are not alone would change our attitude towards ourselves, making us more united, more responsible, and more helpful to each other.
With the huge computation resources needed to sweep the sky in search of ETI and the lack attention payed to these projects by our capitalistic societies in general, I sincerely thank BOINC creators for this wonderful idea, and also everyone that runs not only SETI but every other project.
I hope that my contribution, along with everybody else's, can make the definite diference in the success of SETI. |
