Personal background |
I'm a university webmaster, distance runner, triathlete, and English major with a variety of Macs running Seti@home. I also run a fantasy football league the MLFL. Most of my spare time is going to training right now because I'm getting ready for my first Ironman- Lake Placid 2002. That's a kind of a major goal and all that training will free up my computers for more unit crunching- although that had nothing to do with the decision I made. My wife is a two-time Ironman and a research scientist, although not only can she not get anyone to help with her research, but she has to share her computer with another scientist, which is ironic, because I have four in my office (well, four up and running). |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Do I think extra terrestrial life exists ? Sure. It's a mathematical certainty. Chances are it will discover us. Hopefully, we'll discover that human nature isn't creature nature (in other words, that extraterrestrials have the same petty concerns and limited scope of thinking that plagues us here at home). The benefits range from new science to an expansion of our perception. The danger is that what's out there is mean spirited and kicks our ass.
Should we look to be found ? Yes. We should keep it simple- real simple. Just a gentle hello.
I run seti@home because I have a bunch of Macs that are available to do the science and seems like a better way to use the processor time.
