Personal background
As with many others, computers happen to be my daily work - mostly in the areas of large scale databases and UNIX. I'm 34 years old, married to a lovely woman and enjoys computer programming, food, movies, walks in the woods, a good book and playing with my radio-controlled helicopter.
And then I see a good purpose letting the CPU's burning a little for SETI, when they have nothing else to do - the CPU's, that is. ;)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Yes! I find it very unlikely that there's no place in the universe where a similar ecological system like the earth has evolved. We are not going to discover the other living planets, though, before we get a less hostile attitude. Just look at how we treat eachother....
2) Not necessary! There's so much radiation coming from the earth, that they already know us.
3) When E.T. wants to be found, this is the first place he/she will show up. E.T. also knows that in order to be less hostile we need to develop ourselves - eventually getting an understanding of other species through SETI@Home. I think E.T. is just waiting for us to use common sense - not technologically - but as human beings, careing for eachother as well as for other life-forms.
