Personal background |
I'm a 22-year-old Danish computer-student, who first stumbled upon Seti@home when I was in the Danish equivalent of High School. Later, when I got an internet-connection, I decided to use my spare CPU-time on this project, as it sounded interesting. It did soon become apparant, that my spare CPU-time on my (by that time's standard quite powerful) computer was rather insignificant, but I managed to finish a few work units.
A computer upgrade (or 2) later, I had a run-in with another Distributed Computing project (The United Devices 'Cure for Cancer' project), and I participated in that for a while. It became too commercial for me, though, and the client wasn't really stable, so I went back to Seti@home - this time with a much more powerful setup and much more CPU-time to spare...
...Now if only I had some more computers... |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
SETI... Search For ExtraTerrestrial Life...
Well, concidering the sheer number of stars out there, some of them just have to harbor life... If we will ever discover them or meet them is dubious, but at least we tried finding them.
Then again, should life exist out there, it might be a prudent move not to advertise their precence. There's no guarantee that whoever discovers them would be very friendly. Same goes for us - what if some alien race with technology to cross the vast expanses of space decides to eradicate us?
Still, I find the project fascinating, and should we discover extraterrestrial life - there's no telling what the impact on our society would be... |
