Profile: Guillermo Yanez

Personal background
My name is Guillermo, proud to be borned in the astronomer's paradise: Chile.
I'm 33 years old, living in Montréal, Canada with my wife and son since September 2002. I have been an active amateur astronomer for about 6 or 7 years now but related one way or another to astronomy since I was a child. Indeed, I had my first telescope when I was 10.
Back when I was in Chile, I joined ACHAYA, the most important local amateur astronomy group. I founded the Diego Portales University astronomy group in Santiago and joined several star parties for quite a while.
I am a proud owner of a Meade classic 10" LX200, tons of accessories, astronomy books, videos, DVDs and a nice 70mm binocular.
I definitely miss the northern Chile skies but I am still a very enthusiastic amateur here in Montréal (in spite of the cold weather).
Astronomy is a hobby for the spirit. It is the ritual of being conscious that we are just a dot in the universe and that the jewels of the skies are out there for us to find them.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does extraterrestrial life exist? I definitely believe that there is enough mathematical and logical evidence to believe it does and is much more abundant than we think. Indeed, empirically finding it is just a matter of time. Now, for the one million dollar question: Is it intelligent life? That one is truly harder to respond and let's say I simply don't know. But if we ever find evidence of intelligent life out of our planet, I think it will be a big shock for humanity, just as it was when we accepted that the earth was not the center of the Universe. The other big question is: Are we prepared to discover that we are not alone?
I think that the SETI project is not just about searching for alien signals but also about educating people all over the world (and that includes government authorities) in order to be prepared for the big discovery we are all expecting. Nonetheless, we shall also be prepared to accept that we are probably alone after all...
The seti@home project means to me that we are doing something serious in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Glad that people inspired in the ideas of scientists such as Carl Sagan, are making this project real.
Are we going to find something? I don't know, but it is our duty as humans to clear the doubts.
Anyway, if I can contribute to find a new radio source that happens to be a quasar or a black hole, that would make my day!
