Personal background
About me

Hi, I grew up in Middlesbrough, which is in the North East of England, I began being interested in computers at the age of around 12 and have been an active internet user since 1992. (Gopher anyone!).

Education

I studied at both The Unversity of Birmingham and The University of Teesside studying both Chemical Engineering and later, Software Engineering of which I have a 2:1 BSc Honors degree.

Work

I now live and work in "Sunny" Dorset on the south coast of England. I work for a company called QinetiQ, which was recently formed after the privatisation of the Defence Evaluation Research Agency. I primarily work in Sonar, writing software for and building sonar systems for the Ministry of Defence, although I also carry out work in non defence areas.

Hobbies

My two main hobbies are using my PC and my car.

Computers Used in SETI

Athlon 1.33GHz 256MB RAM

Duron 950MHz 128MB RAM

Duron 950MHz 256MB RAM

Dell Poweredge 4100 Dual PPro 200MHz

Intel PIII 866MHz 512MB RAM

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I first found out about seti towards the end of 1999 after hearing about the project in a computer magazine. I was excited to be involved in this project and was quickly overwhelmed by the vast amount of computing power that SETI was tapping into after only 6 or so months of being alive.

So, I set my Pentium 150 with 32MB RAM on the job processing SETI units while I wasn't at my PC. It was slow progress, painfully slow. This continued for some time, and I looked forward to the time when a hardware upgrade would mean that I could make more of a contribution to the project, but unfortunately the lack of funds in my bank account was stopping me from making that purchase. I eventually stopped using SETI after I reached the grand total of 60 odd units.

Well, time passed, and along came my first "real" job, and along with it came a decent pay packet. I upgraded my machine first to a K62-500, then to an Athlon 750, leaving the 500 as a spare machine. Times are much happier now, and I seem to be disposing of about 6 units per day amongst my 5 machines.
