Personal background
I'm running an Intel E7300 (2.66GHz) overclocked to 3.6GHz stably. Computers are one of my hobbies, especially hardware and overclocking. I'm an invalid who hates being stuck at home. Thank sky-pixies for the internet!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I may as well use my computer's down-time for something and I've always been an avid sci-fi fan so........ Plus it gives me an excuse to overclock, try to get as many units done as possible. (Error-free I might add, a computer that isn't stable is just a lump of metal, silicon and plastic).
I like SETI as opposed to other distributed computing projects as no commercial entity stands to make money out of my CPU time. Sure, it may be a noble cause to donate CPU time to trying to find a cure for cancer but if such a cure is found you can bet your bottom dollar that "the company" will make a fortune out of it. And if I then get cancer and need their expensive drug sometime will they give it to me free or discounted because I donated X amount of CPU-years to help discover it? I don't think so jack.
BOINC seems like a good idea for those who want to crunch data for other projects as well/instead of SETI but I'm giving my CPU cycles for science, not for profit.
Rock on SETI!
