| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
If we are the only intelligent life forms in the Universe I would be very surprised. The Universe is such a huge place, and we are told by people in the astrophysics areas that we are not a special place any more. I don't think we will find out about extraterrestrial life in my lifetime, although it would be nice to know before I die. Benefits and Dangers are hard to consider. It is very likely that even if we do manage to located, and then communicate with extraterrestrial life, that many generations will pass before any benefits can be realised.
Humans should not transmit a beacon. Mainly for two reasons. The first being where do we point the signal, and the second being why would we want to attract something we know nothing about. The other life probably won't make it in our life so we are actually planning future generations 'first contact'.
I run seti@home as I am a believer of extraterrestrial life.
The project is a great idea, and as there are more and more new searches being added, I think that there should be a lot more people involved, and that all the data should be reduced on off-site machines - at least as a first test. |
