Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am certain that life exists elsewhere in the universe. I think it is highly probable that some of that life is at least as intelligent as we are and just as curious about the universe. Whether any of that life is sufficiently like us to make possible a cultural, scientific and/or commercial relationship with us, remains to be seen. I sincerely hope and pray that no other life will be enough like us so that a relationship with us would include warfare or other acts of domination and destruction, but who can say at this point. For that reason I belive we (mankind) should intensify our study the cosmos, significantly increase our level of investment in basic scientific research, and do nothing more than we already are to attract attention to ourselves. I cannot help but wonder whether a life form intelligent enough to sort out the transmissions we have been making for the last century or so, would contact us, given what we are doing to the earth and to each other. We need to put a lot more effort into finding a way to live in pease with each other and into learning to detect and fend off the stellar objects that periodically collide with the earth.
