Personal background
G'day, My name is Peter and I live in Adelaide, Australia.

I make a living in the Information Technology department of a company here in Adelaide and most of my work involves web application development and systems administration. I also do some freelance web development and hosting (www.inveress.net).

My main other interest is writing and performing music - currently in between bands, though.

I also have a wonderful wife and two daughters that make my life a joy. Woo hoo!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think there's intelligent life out there. When you look at all the diversity that exists here on Earth and the evidence of life (admittedly non-intelligent so far) on Mars, and consider the fact that all this is just from one solar system when there are billions of solar systems out there, the odds are defninitely in favour of it.

As we thrust further and further out into space we may encounter intelligent life, but let's face it, space if HUGE so the odds of actually meeting someone aren't that good. We have to rely on signal detection if we want to make any decent headway into searching the universe and that's where SETI comes into the picture!

The only thing is, I'm not sure if we're ready to make contact yet. When you consider how many problems we still have between the different nations, races and religions here on Earth, think of the scale of problem we might have if we have to deal with a whole different species!

I run SETI@home because I want to find out whether other intelligent life exists in the universe. I'm not sure if we'll even be able to make physical contact if we do find something - the distances are so great and our ability to cross them is generally unequal to the task - but it would be interesting to know we're not alone.
