Personal background
Hi all.
Let me briefly tell you about myself. I am keen Astronomer and a member of the Hampshire Astronomical Group based at Clanfield in the South of the UK. The group is for amateur Astronomers and has a large 24 Inch Newtonian telescope at the groups disposal plus four other smaller scopes.
I am very interested in space and the possiblity of life other than our own and have been since the age of eight when I first looked through a scope at a distant Planet called Saturn, this sight got me hooked and to this very day I am still awe struck at its majestic beauty.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
My personal feelings about SETI are that as there are more Stars out there than grains of sand on the entire Planet Earth, the potential of other Stars or Galaxys having Solar Systems just like ours that are capable of sustaining life is a very high possibility, indeed it has been shown that planets do exist in other Solar Systems but sadly as yet an Earth type Planet has not been spotted just yet although with the pace or technology this will soon be happening, maybe within my lifetime I hope.

It truely amazes me that we could be the only life in the Universe and we would be a very arrogant race to believe so otherwise. This might be a factor in us not recieving any conclusive signals just yet, other beings might also be thinking that they are alone and are not trying to contact anyone else, perhaps eventually our faint radio and television signals will reach them and they might just respond back if their technology is advanced enough for them to do so.

I tend to think that we will find a signal eventually but we have to remember the vast distances involved and the time it will take to get a reply back, this will not be a very easy task to do if indeed they have heard our radio and televison broadcast chatter and they finally decide to contact us.

Iam concerned though about the possibilty of ET's wanting our Earth for its natural resources.

Just like the Americans who took over from the native Indians and claimed the land for themselves, or the British taking Australian land from the Aboriginies, this always seems to happen to less advanced cultures when more advanced cultures take over, this might happen to Earth if we are deemed to be a less advanced culture by other beings from outer space, lets hope not!

We must be on our guard though for this chilling possibility!

I run SETI AT HOME 24 hours a day, sadly my PC is not as powerful as some PC's to give a high input to this project. I do hope one day it may find something that is of interest.
Keep up the good work :-)
Ady
