Personal background
I was born in 1968 in Windham County Vermont where I used to work as a criminal defense investigator for the State until they fired me on Sept. 19, 2001, because they thought I was going to be activated for National Guard duty and I filed a Union grievance against them. (I serve as an M1 Abrams Platoon Leader with the rank of Lieutenant.) They cited these reasons in their termination letter to me and the Vermont State Employees Union filed suit. In Aug. 2002 I received $25,000 from the state to drop the case. On Sept. 9, 2002 I will be closing on my first house. (Can you believe that my employer was a lawyer?! What a fool.)

I also just got married in August, so I no long have any hobbies. However, during the warmer months I do get to drive my 1972 BMW 2002tii like a mad man in the wee hours of the morning over narrow country dirt roads; windows down, engine screaming past red line, listening to Tom Waits on the stereo. The contrast is quit a rush.

Lastly, the thing I enjoy the most is rescuing parrots from abusive and neglectful situation. I currently have two Umbrella Cockatoos, A Scarlet Macaw, A Blue & Gold Macaw and a pair of normal grey cockatiels. They are quite a handful to say the least.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am thoroughly convinced that ET is out there. I base this solely on the mathematical probability that it is nearly impossible that ET isn't out there. Let me explain, and I'll try not to sound like Carl Sagan.

It is an accepted scientific fact that there are countless stars out there in the universe. Given that astronomical number, what is the possibility that our sun, a minor and insignificant star, is the only one that has life existing on an orbiting body? Therefore, there must be something out there other than ourselves.

I have no idea when or if we will ever make contact, but I am certain that humankind is not prepared for, nor will we act in accordance with our best intentions once contact is made. Bottom line: someone, be it a government, a politician, a what-have-you will muck it up. We can't get along with our current neighbors how are we going to get along with ET.

That said I believe that we should attempt to make contact nevertheless. The potential knowledge and experience gained are worth the risks however grave they may be.

I run SETI@home on all of the offices computers (4, PII 400Mhz w/ 128MB RAM) 24/7 and no one knows it. It has not impacted the performance of the machines at all. I have enjoyed being part of this project. I consider it an honor and I hope that SETI@home will lead to other projects of a larger scale. SETI@home has certainly shown that there is an interest and a belief prevalent among a cross-section of the population, that we are not alone and that ET must be found.

Good luck SETI and if I find ET first, you're buying the beer!
