Personal background
I'm a 26 year old PhD Student (in network routing) from Middleton, Manchester, UK. My main passion is Manchester United (www.manutd.com), I also enjoy cycling, computing, and sci-fi, especially Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I'm a regular on the Audioscrobbler.com music site ..and I also frequent (and moderate) ratetheref.co.uk, the UK's first referee rating site!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Does ET life exist? It must do, or we've got one heck of a big empty universe outside of planet earth! I feel that alien contact will not occur in my lifetime, perhaps there is some form of Star Trek-esque Prime Directive out there that stops them announcing themselves to us until we're advanced enough to deal with it, which we certainly aren't currently.
Should be transmit a beacon? We already do, in the form of all the television and similar broadcasts that radiate from our planet. Anyone who's listening out there has a pretty good chance of hearing them, if they're paying any attention to out little corner of the galaxy. But should we send a specific message into deep space? I think we should, but not expect a reply!
I run SETI@Home just to see if there is any signs of life out there, that we're capable of comprehending.

I founded the DigiGuide Users SETI group, and I currently run SETI@Home on 2 machines full time; an AMD 1.3GHz XP box, and a PIII 500MHz XP box. Now running on BOINC.
