Personal background
Born, bred, and raised in the greatest American city: Chicago! Lived here my whole life except for two years in New Mexico, and the odd year of holiday and failed chances. New Mexico is another great place to live. If you've never been to Los Alamos, you're missing one of the weirdest towns in America. Screw Roswell, Los Alamos is a TV show waiting to happen. And there is nothing stranger than driving past the back roads Los Alamos Tech Areas at 2 A.M. with their eerie stillness and strained amber streetlights.
Right now I'm working towards being a voice over and dramatic re-enactment actor. Wish me luck!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) I believe Life is the norm, not the exception, but intelligence and reason are less common. I think odds are the panspermia (sp?) theory, the idea that life was seeded from offworld, is quite valid. Life can exist in the most 'toxic' of environments, but intelligence, things like "Love", are rich luxuries. They take a lot of energy, and if we didn't live on such a damn fine planet, there would be a slim chance of them being on this world.
When extraterrestrial life is discovered and proven, the biggest dangers would be of a biological kind. Same with the benefits. We find new species on Earth even today, and they never make the papers, except for the industry journals. But who's to say if we'll be jaded after a generation of fishing on Europa? I think the biggest discovery would be extraterrestrial intelligence and reason. I'd argue that terrestrial social animals has intelligence, but their reason is limited. Grammar can only go so far for them. anyways...
2) A beacon is a bad idea. I'm usually paranoid, or at least I like to know the other guy is there before they know I am there. Anyways, I think it's pretty common knowledge we have some of the nicest beaches in the local systems. That and you can't get a decent onion within a parsec or two besides here. What traveller doesn't know these things are here?
3) I run SETI@home because the R&D system in this country has agendas, biases, and ignorance, and that's especially true when you try to get money. It's good to search, and if I was giving money out to SETI, I would make them use the money for bigger dishes, not bigger computers. We do a good job on the processing part.
