Personal background
Greetings, Let's just say I'm around 40 or to look at it another way I missed being a "baby boomer" by 6 months or so. I'm always late ;0) I'm a telecommunications technician by trade but around 20 years ago I was captivated by a new diagnostic tool that had just been imported into Australia called a "computer" and was lucky enough to be one of 3 people accepted to be trained in it's operation. Punch cards YUK!!!! Anyway you guessed it, within a year I had stopped being a comms tech and never went back. Although retired now due to poor health computers have continued to be a consuming passion. I have managed to incorporate them into my other interests also which has been great fun. What's that? My other interests? Oh!! I'm also a licenced radio amateur (HAM if you like) and fly radio controlled aircraft. :0)

At this time the wife and I run 3 computers here on the home network, 2 xp2000 AMD's and an old Thunderbird 1200 as the server. All running set@home of course (command line client). Although I've offered to set up a seperate seti account she prefers for us to keep working as a team under my account so there we are. Our aim is to make the top 1% of users world wide in terms of processed units.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm a sort of a hands on type of guy. I believe in what I can see, touch, taste and smell. I also believe in the cold logic of mathematics and let's face it people. Using any mathematical model you choose the chance of this little blue ball being the only sphere supporting life in the universe is about ohhhh NIL. They're out there for sure. The only "if" is whether we will ever find them or if they find us. Can we? and if we do can we ever travel out there? I don't know. What I do know is that we will and must try and that is what seti@home is about for me. I'm trying.

Is it safe? Will they be friendly? Who knows? If however human endeavour was limited by what was safe we'd still be huddling in the back of caves so let's get to it.
