Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
You would have to be incredibly self centered to think that out of the gazillions of stars out there that only our puny little solar system could support life. I feel that more than likely "1st contact" will come or has already come via our space program. I imagine that radio signals transmitted from earth will eventually catch the curious (third?!?) eye of some passing space vehicle. This in itself brings forth another question. On earth, our species rules over all others.. However this might not be the case should a hostile, highly advanced race come calling. So the question, should we initiate "1st contact" by broadcasting a signal designed to act as a beacon, before our race is capable of defending itself against a possibly hostile force. Interesting problem to say the least. Some might argue that my first statement is paranoid. But think of all of the species that we consider "lower" or to be "just animals".. To a race sophisticated enough to make it here, we might be just another giant ant farm to be squished. I would hate to end up as someones cattle.. A certain Twilight Zone episode springs to mind.. "To Serve Man"... (It was a cookbook) However, being the gambler that I am, I would say yes, the mere fact that we are self aware enough to even consider that there might be someone "else" out there demands by our own curious nature that we investigate and prove/disprove it.

So, I run seti@home to satisfy my own need to follow my nature and question the question. I run it to add my voice to millions of others who all look to the stars and wonder. I run it to add my strength to the others of my race (the human race) who do the same as I hoping to be the one.. The one who finds them.
