Personal background
I am currently living in Victoria, British Columbia, and I am a biologist with the provincial government. Most of my work is impact assessment and modelling of aquaculture impacts on the environment. I have always been interested in space and as a biologist I find it hard to imagine that life as we know it only exists on this planet. In addition, I think it would be quite a coup for a biologist to discover a REALLY new form of life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think SETI@home is an excellent tool for the stage we are at in technology. I don't know of any other scientific venture where the general public can help analyse the data with their own computers. Really, it is a wonderful idea and I am happy to be a part of it. If only we could harness this computing power for other projects.

Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? Well, when you sit and contemplate just how immense and varied the universe is, you basically have to conclude that there must be life out there somewhere purely on the basis of chance. Will we ever discover it, is an entirely different question, and I don't think we will find it anytime in the near future. I hope I am wrong though.

I definitely think we should be transmitting a beacon. We are pumping out lots of garbage as it is, and if there are some big nasty aliens out there that want to have us for dinner, they will find us regardless of whether or not we transmit a beacon. Who knows, maybe if they actually see something intelligent as opposed to Three's Company re-runs they might take pity on us.
