Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think extraterrestrial life exists? Yes, although if it's intelligent we are more likely to be discovered by it rather than the other way around. I think our first contact is most likely in the Jovian moons, in the form of primitive life. If we do discover radio frequency signals indicating other life, it's unlikely that we'll be able to establish contact. The benefits will be 1) It will confirm that we're not alone in the universe and 2) If we can decypher the signals we may be able to expand our perception of the universe.

The dangers are 1 and 2 above. Some people just won't be able to reconcile this with their perception of the universe.

At this time a beacon will be useless. By the time it reaches a distant star we'll probably have created newer, faster methods of communication.

SETI@home is a great way to participate in the search for extra-terrestrial life. It's cheap and the very numbers of people who participate are a good indication of how much public interest there is.

Suggestions? Find something, already! Also, what about a search for intelligent life on earth??? :-)
