Profile: Legion

Personal background
Computers and networks have always fascinated me; my title at Hantover, Inc. in Kansas City, MO is Systems Coordinator. I am responsible for maintaining and upgrading hardware and software systems which include our Sun Sparc servers (soon to be running Solaris 9!), our myriad of office PC's, our Definity phone switch, and all types of processes and reports. Life is good. :)

At home, my passions include computer gaming (right now I'm playing Dungeon Siege, Tony Hawk 3, Grand Theft Auto 3 in addition to the normal CounterStrike and Day of Defeat). I'm also an avid RPG player, a big fan of everything from Third Edition to online RPG's like Baldur's Gate (and Neverwinter Nights! Woo hah!).

One needs to get out once in a while, and when I do I either head for Gold's Gym, pick up a racquet and head for the tennis courts, or (if the weather is permitting) go for a swim. Every once in a while I get out west to visit my family, and love spending time in Arizona and Colorado (I have a feeling I'll be moving there sometime...)

Please don't hesitate to drop me a line at kai@mithryl.com or visit my webspace at www.mithryl.com. It's not much right now as I'm just learning how to code HTML/XML, but eventually I will create a masterpiece. :)

Have a great day!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As vast as the universe (multiverse?) is, I cannot and will not believe we are the only life in it. I firmly believe that we have evolved from single-cell organisms; that spark of life could happen on a million different worlds in a billion different galaxies. It would be both senseless and insulting to believe ourselves the only living beings in existence.

A beacon is an excellent idea, provided we gauge what information we are sending. I do not believe that an alien race, upon discovery of our existence, will mount an all-out attack on the earth. I would choose to believe that they would think along scientific lines, wondering the same questions we do--where are they? What are they? Why are they? Human psychology varies enough on our own planet that I will not guess the thought process of an alien civilization, but merely comment that I hope that peaceful and beneficial contact can be made someday.

I run SETI@home because I think it a generous effort to forward a worthwhile cause--finding out who we are and what our place is in the world has always been on the mind of man. By listening to the stars and interpreting what they tell us about the reaches of space, I do believe we'll learn something about ourselves.
