Profile: John Tyner

Personal background
No, that's not my picture, but then who'd bother to look at the profile of another bald tech nerd. That's my step-daughter, Charlotte, and her cat, Annie. Now that you're in here, I'm an aerospace engineer working for the U.S. Navy, and I've been running SETI@home at work on a few PCs and at home on my old Mac since the beta-test phases back in early '99. I founded (and I'm the only member of) the group "Bass Ale Rules!", though I mostly make my own beer now.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it nearly certain that extraterrestrial life exists. I also think it improbable, based on the insignificant period of time intelligent life has been around on Earth, that civilizations advanced enough to communicate with one another would exist at the same time. I guess that puts me in the pessimist category regarding the endurance of technologically-advanced civilization. But, as I've said before, "Always be a pessimist; you'll rarely ever be dissappointed." Still, I run SETI, and keep alive that little bit of hope.
