Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
What are we afraid of? Being proved to NOT be the gods we think we are.
Interest in the subject. Own Project: Comparison of processing times of different OS's (Win98/2k/XP) on same hardware: AMD 1900 (1600MHz) CPU, 256Mb RAM, Iwill XP333-R motherboard. So far results are: quickest: Win98, then WinXP, and slowest on Win2k, i.e. if data quantity downloaded is same, or near as dammit, size. Can somebody tell me? Also running on Laptop=Intel 650MHz with 256Mb RAM. Takes about 3 times as long on this in comparison to on AMD1900 (1600MHz), which shows that AMD IS BETTER. Planning to set up 3 spare PC's with AMD 1GHz and 500MHz (2off) CPU's for SETI@HOME, solely. Will send you the electricity bill.
Questions:
1 F1, as far as I am concerned is wasted, gives no detail of the workings behind the display. What is it doing?
2 How many times is the data processed by us?
3 Can we get a chart showing the quantity (bytes) of each download by SETI to our PC's, the date of download, the date of backload, CPU time to process. |
