Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I believe exterrestrial life exists. The only way we will obtain proof is if they choose to give it to us, or we stumble across it in a search such as SETI. I believe the latter to be the more likely case. Knowledge that there is intelligent life other than that on earth may change our outlook and draw us closer together as a species, but there will be enough resistance to this that it may be short lived or never attained and will simply pass into being knowledge spoken of little.

2. The earth itself, being oxygen-nitrogen with a stable water mass will of itself be enough of a beacon or attractant. That we are flooding the skies with all manner of electromagnetic radiation already makes us a beacon. If we were to try and construct a beacon it would have to be at one of the poles or else a series of 3 to 5 beacons such that none is behind the horizon to the observers.

3. To discover proof of intelligent life outside our own planet would give us the correct and humbling realization of our own insignificance. Once again mankind would be faced with a frontier to conquer. The next logical step for the species would be to move into space, begin colinizations, begin explorations. A good way to look on the services we volunteer to SETI is that we are making a bid to have our great grandchildren walk on IO, colonize Mars, reach out to the stars. To do nothing is to bid for stagnation of the human race on this declining sphere we call earth.
