Profile: Tuomo Mattila

Personal background
I'm a Finnish student, born in 1984. I'm interested in physics, astronomy, music and computer stuff. I spend a lot of time in front of my computer, do a lot of IRCing (nick Tupeco) and I study and do my homework in front of my computer, on my synthetizer (KORG N364).
I like to listen to power, pagan, black and other melodic metal music types. I don't _hate_ any music genre except for rap, which I barely even consider music.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I would think it's foolish to assume that life can only evolve in Earth-like environments. The life on Earth has wide range of enviromental conditions where it can survive, and I think life (be it silicon-based crystalline beings or whatever) is likely to be widespread. Intelligent life is a totally different matter. I seem to be somewhat pessimistic about mankind's chances to survive a few more thousand years with this level of technology (with higher even less). So if I assume that mankind is able to seek out new (intelligent) life for a time span of 30 000 years, how long a time is that in the universal scale? It's unlikely, that there is another intelligent species of a high technology level existing in our relatively close vicinity during this period of time. The chances of finding an alien race in its stone age would be much higher.

Like all science, SETI is fun and SETI@home is an easy way to participate.
