Profile: Keith V. Olson

Personal background
I'm a Computer Engineer currently working as web developer for a small company in downtown Portland, Oregon. I've been working in computers and software since I graduated from O.I.T. in 1991. The best part about my current job is that I'm only 7 blocks from Powell's City of Books. So from that you can probably guess that one of my favorite pastimes is reading. But I also like collecting... books and other science fiction memorabilia. Other than that I enjoy working on my home network of Linux boxes, playing with my dog Jessica (see picture), and taking vacations with my wife.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe somewhere in this vast universe (if not our own galaxy) there must be other life and/or other civilizations. I'm not sure if we will ever find them, but we never will if we don't look.

About the benefits or dangers. I read alot of science fiction, much of which deals with contact with alien races... Wether first contact goes good or bad, one thing is for sure... humanity will be forever changed.

Until we know if our neighbors are friendly or not, I don't believe we should broadcast our location (although we already have to some extent).

I love SETI@Home because it gives me the chance to participate in this great search for extraterrestrial life. I hope the project continues on for many years/decades.
