Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I came upon SETI@home while looking for a way to become involved in amateur radio astronomy. I believe life exists elsewhere in the Universe. It's found under even extreme conditions on Earth. The variety of environments on other planets is bound to produce many that can support life. I also believe there is intelligent life out there. It took mankind tens of thousands of years to become aware of itself on the globe. So what if it takes as long to find intelligent life in the Universe? I believe it will happen and that it's worth the time and effort. We must not let our ability to conceive of grandiose notions be dampened by our own sense of mortality. This is just a beginning. If I can quote Jurassic Park without discrediting myself, "Life finds a way." It is in our nature to reach out and find one another. I think questions that need more attention are, what will be the nature of our response, who will send it, and who will fund it?
