Profile: COPERNICUS Turk Seti Team

Personal background
Hello my friends,

My name is Nicholas COPERNICUS, an astronomer. I was born in Poland in 1473. After studying some astronomy at the University of Kraków, I spent a lot of time in Italy studying various subjects, including medicine and canon law. (I was always greedy for knowledge.) I loved Italy, and Italians admired me too. They proposed me to be a lecturer in Rome on mathematics and astronomy. 12 years later, I decided to go a bit north, Frauenburg (I small city in East Prussia). I don’t know why but somehow the religious community of this city realized my worth. I had been nominated to the canon of the cathedral in there.
After a certain time I realized that I will never be canonized as a saint. Then I have chosen another way which would immortalize me. Yes, I decided to write my beliefs concerning the universe. It was around 1530.
I have named this treatise as De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres), later on named as the Copernican system. I asserted that the earth rotated on its axis once daily and traveled around the sun once yearly. Up until my time the thinkers of the western world believed in the Ptolemaic theory that the universe was a closed space bounded by a spherical envelope beyond which there was nothing. They believed the Earth was the center of the universe and that the stars, planets, and Sun revolved around the stationary Earth. Of course my beliefs were somewhat unacceptable at that time. I have got some difficulties but not more than my friend Galilei had. Later on everybody accepted the truth, and the modern astronomy was built upon the foundation of the Copernican system. (Eh, no need to be modest, I deserved that fame!)

Furthermore, I am a proud member of Turk Seti Team.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It sounds very fantastic and exciting: “We are not alone in the universe”. I belive it is true, and I belive we will reach them. When? Not in my lifetime but it does not dash my hopes. This is a kind of piety for me and will continue after me...

"...A noble example of piety, I have set before the eyes of my children and grandchildren, as through many other, so too through this work; and I believe that they will emulate this fair example by continually increasing the honors appropriate to their line and, like me, in their riper years adding greatly to their personal fame..." - from the Nomos (Holy Law) of King Antiochos 50 B.C.
