Personal background

Currently I'm just a local high-school student living in Melbourne, Australia.
I attend Melboune High School, which is a state school. At the time of writing, my age is 14 and seven months.

I would consider myself a bit of a coder, but I mainly do all sorts of stuff
on the computer. I'm not particularly interested in a course in IT and just do it as a (pretty serious) hobby. I run Linux (kernel 2.4.20) on my home box. One of
my disappointments is the lack of awareness of other alternative OS's and interesting programming languages (anything other than VB) in schools.

I also enjoy reading in a number of genres, including fantasy and science fiction.
I'm not really that interested in Star-Trek, but have enjoyed the occassional
movie (The Wrath of Khan, The First Contact).

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home

I think there is a very real possibility that other life exists. Even if it seems at first implausible to try to reach them (the distances involved) whether by travel or just by radio it is something interesting to ponder.

Depending on the psychology and other factors of any extra-terrestrial life
(I hesitate to use 'Aliens') we may be viewed as a threat or an ally. Perhaps they are just aloof?
But if you really try to measure our achievements in a cosmic scale, it is really very humbling and I think we have yet to prove ourselves as a planet.
I believe this will come when the seperation of nations and governments is amalgamated. When we can act as a planet, not just a bunch of free-spirited
'tribes', then we can begin to really make interstellar progress.

I started running SETI@Home (seriously) when I converted to Linux.
I think SAH demonstrates the superb abilities of the Linux task scheduler, because I run SAH constantly in the background at "nice" 20.

eg: nice -n 20 ./setiathome &
