Profile: Andy Swingler

Personal background
Hi. My name is Andy Swingler, and I'm a Brit living in Southern California with my wife and baby daughter.
I'm a Computer Consultant by trade, but I also like other 'techie' stuff like cars, flying, gadgets and so-on.

I'm in my mid thirties.

I'll put more info on here when I think of something that you might actually find interesting to read!!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'm torn between my analytical background, which suggests that life should exist outside of this planet, and my religous beliefs which teach that this is the only planet with life. I've heard some quite compelling evidence in recent months from acknowledged members of the scientific community to suggest that my religious beliefs might have some basis, but I still feel that we are honour-bound to test this theory as much as possible.

I've been a SETI@Home user for around 12 months now, and I run five background instances of it on my systems, with SetiQueue managing them. I'm heading towards the 2000 unit mark as I rewrite this (early June 2002) so I'm hoping to crash through that barrier in the next month-or-so.

I think that it would do no harm for humans to send messages to others who may be listening. I believe that the main message should be one of friendship - the technical and historical stuff can come later. There's only one chance to make first-contact, and it should be done in friendship.
