Profile: Mac Zimmerman

Personal background
Age 58, retired Air Force, Electronics Technician. Own small computer sales/repair
store in central Kansas, USA. Fire Chief for volunteer department of 24 fire fighters.
Hobbies: electronics and computers. (How nice it was to retire and start a job that
was my hobby). Started first dial-in-internet service for our community of 1400 folks in 1997.
Just put in high speed wireless(1.4mb) service in Nov 2001. Raised 3 boys who are all
into computers, one works at the shop with me and my youngest brother who does appliance
and TV repair. My son spends most of his time keeping the Internet/mail servers running!
My other "hobby" is reading, science fiction/fact and medical fact. Love to keep up to date
on latest science developments even tho I can't fully understand most of it.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I believe in extraterrestial life...the odds are in our favor. Just looking
at the pictures of the millions of galaxies out there with billions of stars in them tells
me we can't be the only island of life in the universe. But the distances are so vast
that we may never hear them, at least not in my lifetime, but maybe we will in my son's lifetime or
his son's lifetime. Its the reason I run the Seti program, we have to start someplace
and I want to be a part of that search. Will meeting another civilization will
be good or bad? Lets see if we can detect them first....our own civilization has a lot
of growing up to do and maybe we'll be an adult by the time we actually meet them and, then,
the question of good or bad may have a completely different meaning.
