Personal background
I am a twenty one year old writer and artist from North Georgia. My hobbies are reading, writing, drawing, learning, talking, traveling and dreaming. I love the outdoors and love to learn everything I can about the world around me.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I think that extraterrestrial life exists beyond our wildest dreams. I believe that contact will occur within the next one hundred years but I doubt it will be the kind of contact we desire. If the contacting race is anything like we are, then we can only look forward to having our land taken away from us, the eradication of our culture and language, slavery, and death from disease and the disgust of our invaders. I hope that the contacting race will be benevelot and kind and unlike us, seek only in helping us make our planet cleaner, share some of their technology to help us make travel and living more effiencent and easier on our planet. That would be a dream come true.
2. No, we should not transmit a beacon for others to find. It would not be necessary for surely any races with the technology to travel through space would know how to tell if a planet was full of lifeforms or not. Also, a beacon might serve only as a magnet for negative enties. If used, I would like the beacon to say that we will welcome visitors in a peaceful way, to list details of our people and our languages and races, details on where to land and how they will be treated, and any warnings that might be appropiate.
3. I run Seti@home because I believe it is a great good. It promotes the sharing of resources in a world where we don't normally share. If we can learn from this project the leaps forward that are possible when we all work together, maybe we can apply this enthusiasm and curiousty toward other projects in the future. Plus, if we do encounter signals from other life forms, i would like to know that I contributed toward it, if only a little bit.
