Personal background
I'm from Brading on The Isle of Wight, a small island just off the South coast of England. I'm 32 and I work as a Duty Manager for the Isle of Wight Council's leisure department. My hobbies are computers, the internet, stamp collecting and of course SETI and the search for Extraterrestrial life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do think extraterrestrial life exists, afterall, humanity exists!! The universe is probably teeming with "intelligent" life forms, but because the universe is so vast (and still expanding), the nearest extraterrestrial life may be many thousands of light years away. For extraterrestrial life to be discovered, it will have had to be transmitting some sort of signal in our direction for many hundreds, even thousands of years. Once we have detected an extraterrestrial signal, it will then have to be decoded to get anything meaningful from it. An extraterrestrial signl will be the voice of the life forms that sent it. How will we determine what language the signal was sent in? How will we deterine the intentions of the sender? Any signal received will probably be in no language remotely similar to anything that mankind has seen or heard before!!

The benefits of such a disovery will not be felt for many hundreds or thousands of years, mainly because of the distances involved. If we were able to reply to a signal, how long would it take the reply to reach the planet/star that it came from?

Humans should transmit a beacon for others to find. A powerful beacon should be built in space, in Earth's orbit, powered by solar energy. It should be like a lighthouse, sending a powerful beam of pulses of energy in all directions, at many frequencies. We should only send numbers, which is the language of the Universe, as any other language would be meaningless to other extraterrestrial life. Just send numbers, in sequence, as a series of pulses. Any extraterrestrial life forms that are capable of receiving our signal, should be able to count, and hence realise that there is another intelligent life form out there that can count also. That would be enough to get their attention!!

I run SETI@Home on my computer because I feel it is a very worthwhile and exciting project and I am able to be a small part in it.
