Personal background |
Hi,
I'm Rik, 39 years old, from Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I'm registered SETI@Home user since 12-1-2000 and a member of the Number 1 Team: SETI@Netherlands. I started a webring for my team members. Visit my page to see (of voor Nederlanders: doe mee!). the page is only in Dutch for the moment.
My main hobbies are computers, football (that is soccer for you US people), and talking nonsense with friends or with strangers in some pub.
The picture was taken in the Belgium Ardennes, on a 50 km walk :)
I'm trying to start my own company, specialised in internet marketing and webmaster services, called dBIS. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
It would be very arrogant to think we are alone in this endless universe. And in the end we might discover some extraterrestrial life. Since we as humans continue to kill each other on a large scale and see a predator economic system as freedom, chances are high that:
- the aliens distroy our planet as soon as they discover us
- we are finally gonna learn something
So there is a danger in providing prove of our existance to more advanced creatures out there, as long as we don't advance into a really cilivised life form. The message. if any, should be friendly and humble.
I run SETI at home because I really like the idea of distributed computing, and until now I couldn't find a better project to join. I have to admit I became a bit addicted to the competition part; mainly though through the marvelous website of S@NL. |
