Profile: Mezzo

Personal background
Helle there,

I'm Mezzo, and I live near Chelmsford in Essex, in the UK. Thought I'd sign up to SETI@Home as I own a new Dell PC which is pretty fast.

I was 30 in June of 2003, and my hobbies are Colchester United Football Club and computing/internet. I can't programme as such, but I'm learning HTML and SQL at the moment. I'm wondering if its worth learning HTML as most stuff seems to be done on the likes of FrontPage and Dreamweaver these days!

I'm currently out of work at the moment, but before that I worked for HSBC then JPMorganChase. The work I was doing at my last job was Project/IT/Static Data/Pricing etc within Private Banking.

It's proving difficult to get back into employment in todays current economic climate, but I've had a few interviews at Northern Trust, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Lombard Odier and Morgan Stanley. Hopefully one of these will pay off!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Does extraterrestrial life exist? Yeah of course. The universe is virtually infinite so the chances of Earth being the only planet harbouring life are virtually non-existant. I very much doubt we'll find life on another planet within our lifetimes. It could take thousands of years. And of course theres the possibility that other life-forms will find us first!

2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? Definitely. If only to make it easier for them to find us. Information we coud provide would be population stats, dna breakdown of humans and the types of animals on our planet. Our different cultures, what we know about our planet, other planets and the rest of the universe. Information on diseases that we have yet to find a cure for, just in case whoever picks up the beacon has already found a cure for them!

3. Why do you run SETI@Home, and your views? To increase the chances of us finding life out there. I have a fast PC and never push it to its maximum anyway so its no harm having SETI running in the background. Its a great idea and more people should do it. Just think of all those computers that stay dormant overnight in cities like London and New York - if they were running SETI the project would be so much faster that it is now.
