Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think the odds favor at least one other extra-terrestrial sentient race in our galaxy and we should always make the attempt to detect any signals that might be coming from them. The odds are that any race generating a signal that we are able to detect will be much more advanced than we are, considering that the signals we are monitoring are taking decades, if not centuries to get here from their origin. I'll point out that it was less than 100 years ago that we were unable to sustain powered flight, then compare that to the aircraft and spacecraft we have today. You can get an idea of how even a small difference in the age of a civilization can cause a large difference in technology levels.

With that said, I doubt we'll find anything soon. A quick examination of the part of the galaxy covered by the Aricibo Radio Telescope shows that the majority of the sky is never scanned. We would need space-based radio telescopes to fully cover our galaxy and any other galaxies we would be interested in.

The Seti@Home project is a great way to assist processing the data from Aricibo. The amount of data coming in would swamp any mainframe and sharing the load with idle computers around the world makes excellent sense.
