Profile: Stephen Bedingfield

Personal background
I live in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. My interests include travelling and astronomy. I have been running the SETI@home client since early June 1999 and facilitated the Baha'i SETI workgroup immediately thereafter (http://bahai-seti.org/).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I cannot intuitively or logically accept that our existent here on our "pale blue dot" is simply by chance. However organized, life, i believe, is pervasive throughout the vastness of the universe, with sentient and intelligent life a developing subset of life itself. Life, or the fossil record of life, may be discovered on Mars or some other body in our solar system. Intelligent life may be discovered within the next few generations as technologies and methodologies improve and as humankind persists.

There is an apparent growing popular belief that extraterrestrial life exists. While such popular beliefs are important for the moral support they offer to SETI, it will remain to science to actually discover extraterrestrial life. Hard scientific evidence of ETI will force us to take a harder look at who we are: one human species on a very small, fragile world.

Beyond the credible scientific basis of the SETI@home experiment, i run the program as a positive, collaborative and cooperative endeavour with my human family. It is a fine example of our emerging world-consciousness.
