Does ET exist out there someplace?
Sure, we exist (let's not put an existential twist on this...) so why wouldn't there be other life forms? As Ellie's father said on Contact... it seems like an aweful waste of space. (There's probably even "Extraterrestrial" life forms that exist with us... just on a different plane of existance we cannot detect yet.)
How will we discover it?
That's a toughy. I Think it will be when we begin to explore beyond our solar system that we'll have our first contact with the intergallactic community. I'm sure there's some sort of rule that you cannot make contact with a race that has not sufficiently advanced itself beyond remedial levels (sort of like first contact on Star Trek). Excluding ambigious research, of course.
What are the dangers and benefits?
The only dangers are see are two fold. One, we're destroyed by an alien species that sees us as a plague of existance. A virus if you will. Two, we're captured and used as slaves for some sort of experiment or brute labor. The benefits would be endless. Medical advancements, Recycling advancements, Power output advancements... what else would they help us with? Hell, I'm sure they'd even mingle with us... if you get my drift. ;)
Should humans transmit a beacon and what information should we send, if yes?
Well, you have to consider an ethical standpoint. Do you, as a civilized human being, have the right to decide the fate of all 6.5 billion people that exist on this planet? I for one, do think we do. Think of all the suffereing that goes on, how much they could help us... help us do things we can't do alone. Share with us their thoughts, their abilities, their care. I guess the question is, do they have human emotions? I would be worried if they didn't... no remorse for doing bad things to others that get hurt... but they wouldn't have concept of bad, hurt, pain, good, happiness, suffering.
