Personal background |
Richard Watters - Consultant - BP Oil Research & Logistics Technology - Greater Chicago Area
Involved with chemical engineering research projects in the development of hydrotreating/hydrocracking crude oil refining processes including pilot plant operations and data analysis for clientele in China, Russia, India and Germany. Hydrotreating is used to stabilize reactive hydrocarbons and remove contaminants such as sulphur and nitrogen compounds to prevent process catalyst poisoning and enable transport fuels to meet product specifications. Following hydrotreatment to reduce contaminant levels, hydrocracking is used to crack longer chain gas oil hydrocarbons to lower boiling range naphtha, kerosene and diesel products.
Functions: Operator/Control Board Console Monitor of four Pilot Plants, Fractional Distillation units, updating P&IDs, Research Laboratory Team Lead/SME, conduct analyses (via Gas Chromatography Simulated DIstillation, ASTM D-2892, ASTM D-1160, ASTM D-86, densitometer, titrator, sample prep of various chemicals), data reporting/plotting/interpretation, database maintenance of Chemical Inventory System, Sample Manager Administrator (LIMS), purchasing/ordering of mechanical, chemical, safety and laboratory supplies, maintenance/updating of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and related labeling, training of other operators and lab techs on the project.
-Latest Project-
The VCC technology (Veba Combi-Cracker) is a slurry phase hydrocracking/hydrogenation process for converting petroleum residues at very high conversion rates (> 95 %, 524 °C+) and liquid yields (above 100 vol %) into directly marketable distillates. The process uses the principles of the former Bergius-Pier technology for primary conversion of heavy residual oils or coal into light distillates and may be applied to process refinery residues, bitumen, coal or a mixture of coal and residues. The feedstock is slurried with a proprietary additive and is injected into the high-pressure section of the process. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I once had the honor of meeting Dr. Carl Sagan after he gave a lecture at Northern Illinois University in September 1995. My thoughts about the need and my support for the SETI project are summed up in one of his quotes, to wit:
"In the deepest sense the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is a search for ourselves."
— Carl Sagan, 'The Quest for Extraterrestrial Intelligence,' Smithsonian magazine, May 1978 |
