Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I started working on Seti@home at a friends urging, out of my interest in SF and hard science exploration of the solar system. I have since surpassed my friends units completed, and keep shooting for each new percentile increase in my standings.

The science behind the search has been complimented by my previous training in the US Navy in signal mixing and analysis and I enjoy the explanations whenever new science is added to the program.

I think the first ET life we find will not be intelligent, or at a minimum it will be centuries before we have a 'face to face' contact situation with an intelligent civilization. Benifits include tech transfer and likely cultural exchange. Hazards include the (albeit unlikely) biohazard of one environment being hazardous to another, and/or the possibility of innocent misunderstandings being the cause of violent encounters.

Transmitting at this stage is moderately pointless, due to the sheer Power output needed for omnidirectional long distance signal propagation. However, I think that it would be worthwhile to begin a directional broadcast once we have a likely target in mind.
