Profile: D. E. Evans

Personal background
I am a full time student, majoring in English literature, and a web developer for the GNU Project. I am part of the NetBSD SETI-at-home group, and live in Salt Lake City, Utah, where I was born. I am President and founder of the Intelligent Inquiry Educational Society.

I have three pets: a Goffin Cockatoo and two Senegal parrots. I play percussion instruments of various types, including middle eastern rhythms, and enjoy accompanying my wife's Egyptian and Turkish belly dancing. I enjoy the game of chess, snooker, and golf.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe it is probable that life exists on planets other than Earth, but am skeptical about the possibilities of discovering that life. The Universe is a big place. Even if we were to find life, I think it likely that such life would either be inadvertently hostile to us, or we to them, (though I think it unlikely that either they or us would be purposely hostile, at least in the beginning). Ultimately, however, we should try. The imperative to gather knowledge is worth the risk, and we should leave markers to say, "We were here!" that explain what we were. I run Seti@home for that reason. I was here.
