Scott Baller's Profile

Hi Everyone, glad you could stop by. I am currently a university student at the University of Regina. I am studying Engineering and will be completed my program by the end of May 2002. I enjoy participating in numerous activities such as: biking, and swimming. Because I live in Canada, the winters can become long and boring, but I try and keep busy playing the elctric guitar. In addition, I also enjoy ski-dooing (when the snow flies) of coarse.

I enjoy participating in the Seti@home program because it keeps my Linux box busy when I am not around, and I also feel that I am contributing to a noble cause. I feel that Seti is a good organization because it contributes to the efficiency of copmuting. Just think of all the computers that are using power rigth now, but not doing any calculations. Seti Helps to bring a purpose to these computers.

Thanks for reading my profile. You are invited to send my an email. My email address is baller@punkass.com.

Best Regards,

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that life exsist on other plants, but finding it is difficult. Perhaps life existed on other planets, but thousands of years ago. What if we are the first to acheive intellegent life and other planets are still behind us. They may be so distant that their signal reaches us years after their civilization has crumbled.

As in the above example, a beacon sent from Earth to a distant location will take so long to reach the distant location that we may no longer exist when aliens pick up the signal. Asuuming that they know where in the sky to look.

I like the efficiency model of Seti. Using idel processor time is an amazing idea. I feel that there should be more standard around, and frankly more networks that work this way. As far as seatching for little green men is concerned, I feel that it will be quite some time before contact it made. The task is clearly emmense.
